Proof:

Let √5 be a rational number.


So, 5=pq

On squaring both sides

5=p2q2
q2= p25

5 is a factor of p2

5 is a factor of p.

Now, again let p = 5c.

So, 5=5cq

On squaring both sides

Here 5 is a common factor of p, q  

 So p, q are not co-prime.

Therefore our assumption is wrong.
