History of Kumbh Mela

It is believed that Kumbh Mela started in 8th century. It is said philosopher Shankara who instituted regular gathering of learned people for discussion and debate.

Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times over the course of 12 years.

The site of Kumbh Mela rotates  between four places on bank of four sacred rivers

Haridwar on the bank of  river Gangs
Ujjain on the bank of river Shipra
Nashik on the bank of Godavari
Prayag at the confluence of Gangs , Janina and Saraswati

Seventy one countries hosted their flags at the Kumbh
On 24 Jan 19 NRIs visited Kumbh Mela as a part of PRAVASI BHRTIYA DIVAS CELIBRATION
Post Independent this is first Kumbh with sufficient water level.
